The destruction by fire of the landmark St. Mel’s Cathedral in Longford was a devastating blow to the town and surrounding areas. As well as the loss of the outstanding architectural heritage of the building, substantial amounts of national treasures were lost or gravely damaged.

Hegarty Demolition were appointed to execute emergency “making safe” operations to secure the site for investigative purposes and to assist in the salvage and recovery of artifacts and other items of local and national importance.

Hegarty Demolition are now engaged in operations to support the remaining structures by use of a structural steel framework which will stabilize the walls and colonnades along with providing the base framework for a new temporary roof structure. This new roof structure will allow the building to dry out and will protect the surviving structure from the elements until reconstruction is initiated.
